Due to limited land availability in Taiwan, most pig farms that raise breeding sows use intensive housing systems known as gestation crates. During pregnancy, as the piglets continue to grow inside the sow, the sow remains confined in a narrow crate that is only slightly larger than her own body. Long-term confinement in these restrictive crates can lead to weakened hind legs and poor psychological well-being in sows, which may have a significant negative impact on the health and quality of the piglets they produce.
